Beginners Guide to Learn How to Brew Your Own Beer (Home Brew by U)

Homebrew Beer Guides

Here I found a fine introduction to extract (vs grain) brewing put on by the folks at Schoolhouse Beer and Brewing in Marietta, GA.

These videos are short and well-produced introductions to home brewing put forth in a simple and straightforward manner. If you live in the Marietta vicinity you can visit these folks in-person at their store. This is great news because the typically the most effective way to learn a new concept such as home brewing is to find a mentor. With a mentor you’ll be brewing better beers with less mistakes (and less waste). It’s better than trying to figure out everything yourself through YouTube videos (said ironically by a guy who is curating YouTube videos to learn brewing).

Take a look at the video series below. I found them enjoyable.

Basic Brewing Equipment

Ingredients

Grains: for color and flavor.

Malts: Liquid Malt Extract (LME) or Dry Malt Extract (DME): provide sugar that will generate alcohol during fermentation.

Hops: provides aroma and bittering. Stouts use little hops. IPA uses lots of hops.

Yeast: provides fermentation. Eats sugars and produces alcohol as a byproduct.

Priming sugar: to feed the yeasts for the bottling phase. Once bottled the yeasts eat the sugars and produce carbon dioxide. The bottles keep the carbon dioxide trapped within the liquid producing a carbonated beverage!
