In 2018, Kate Field walked into Shark Tank with an easy way for people to brew kombucha at home. She was seeking a $350,000 investment for 10% of her business, The Kombucha Shop.
Kate got the idea in 2013 while teaching families about healthy eating. Realizing home-brewing kits were hard to find, she launched her own company with an initial cost of just $800. Her simple kits lowered the price of a bottle from $5 at the store down to just 25 cents at home.
During her pitch, the Sharks were grossed out by the strange-looking culture used to ferment tea. But behind that funny moment was an incredible sale record of $3.2 million. Sharks Barbara Corcoran and Sara Blakely saw huge potential and offered a joint investment of $200,000 plus a credit line. Kate gladly accepted.
Although the deal fell apart off-camera, exposure from the show sent sales booming with over 15,000 new orders. The brand expanded into Whole Foods, and in 2021, an entrepreneur completed the full purchase of her company in a multimillion-dollar acquisition. Today, with millions in revenue and a multi-million dollar net worth, Kate’s story proves you can turn a small idea into a massive victory!
