Ingredients for making Sauerkraut:
Seasonal vegetables and fruits
Salt (1-2% of total weight of above vegetables and fruits). This recipe uses low amount of salt (1.5%), perfect for short fermentation (3-4 days). I use Himalayan salt.
Herbs/spices (optional)
Additional brine (eg. kombucha or water-salt mixture) – optional
Directions: Follow video above.
Dog feeding recommendation: 1 to 3 teaspoons for every 10kg of body weight. Start slowly, monitor and build up.
Avoid feeding sauerkraut if your dog has a yeast infection or until the yeast is back under control. Fermented foods can have high histamines so be mindful feeding them if your dog is prone to allergies. Sauerkraut is not as clear cut as that though, read more here https://cultured.guru/blog/are-fermented-foods-high-in-histamine-sauerkraut-histamine-levels-explained
Notes: Always introduce new ingredients slowly and monitor. Always practise safe food handling and storage techniques. Every dog is different, as are their diet requirements. Consult your vet if you’re unsure with any of the ingredients.
Happy healthy feeding and nourish your dog one bowl at a time!
Much love, Riesa & Bowie
